Tour Overview

Embark on an exciting 3-day adventure to Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of the country’s most rewarding trekking destinations. Rising to 4,566 metres above sea level, Mount Meru offers a beautiful combination of montane forest, open moorland, dramatic volcanic landscapes, and panoramic views across northern Tanzania.

This short but challenging trek is designed for adventurous travelers who want to experience a high-altitude mountain climb within a limited time. The route takes you from the peaceful surroundings of Arusha National Park through Momella Gate to Saddle Hut, before an early summit attempt on Mount Meru’s spectacular Socialist Peak. After reaching the summit, you will descend through the mountain’s changing landscapes before completing the trek at Momella Gate.

Day 1
Arrival At Arusha Airport Then Transfer To Mount Meru Hotel

Upon arrival at Arusha Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and transferred to Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha. After check-in, you will have time to relax and recover from your journey while enjoying the peaceful surroundings of the hotel.

Later, you will meet your mountain guide for a briefing about the trek. The guide will take you through the hiking plan, safety procedures, equipment requirements, altitude considerations, and what to expect during the summit attempt.

This is also a good opportunity to prepare your hiking gear and get a good night's rest before the adventure begins the following morning.

Day 2
Momella Gate To Saddle Hut

Hiking Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Elevation: From approximately 1,500 m to 3,570 m

After an early breakfast, you will depart from Arusha and drive towards Arusha National Park, where the Mount Meru trek begins at Momella Gate.

After completing the necessary park and registration formalities, you will start hiking through the lower slopes of Mount Meru. The trail initially passes through beautiful montane forest, where you may encounter a variety of bird species and, with some luck, wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, and other animals within the park.

As you gain altitude, the vegetation gradually changes from dense forest to open moorland, revealing increasingly impressive views of the surrounding landscape. The trail continues steadily uphill towards Saddle Hut, with several scenic points along the way where you can take a short rest and enjoy the mountain environment.

Upon reaching Saddle Hut at around 3,570 metres, you will settle in, have dinner, and rest. Your guide will also brief you about the early-morning summit attempt. An early night is important, as the final ascent will begin before dawn.

Summit Attempt To Socialist Peak Descent To Momella Gate For Departure

Summit Elevation: 4,566 m
Hiking Time: Approximately 10-12 hours, depending on conditions and pace

Your final and most rewarding day begins very early, usually around midnight or shortly after. After a light refreshment, you will begin the challenging ascent towards the summit under the guidance of your experienced mountain crew.

The trail becomes steeper as you approach the upper slopes, and the cool pre-dawn conditions make the climb physically demanding. You will continue towards Rhino Point and along the crater rim, eventually reaching Socialist Peak at 4,566 metres, the highest point of Mount Meru.

Standing at the summit as the sun rises is one of the most memorable moments of the adventure. From the summit, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Meru's volcanic crater, the surrounding landscapes, and, when weather conditions are clear, spectacular views towards Mount Kilimanjaro.

After celebrating your achievement and taking some photographs, you will begin the descent. The trail leads back towards Saddle Hut, where you will have a short rest before continuing down through the forest to Momella Gate.

At Momella Gate, you will meet your waiting driver and transfer back to Arusha Airport for your departure, marking the end of your Mount Meru adventure.
