Oldonyo Lengai Climbing
Oldonyo Lengai Climbing
Climb the Mountain of God
Ol Doinyo Lengai, meaning “Mountain of God” in the Maasai language, rises dramatically from the Great Rift Valley near Lake Natron. Unlike the forested slopes of Kilimanjaro and Meru, Lengai has a stark volcanic landscape that makes the climb feel completely different from other Tanzanian mountains.
The ascent is steep and physically demanding, and the climb is usually started during the cooler night hours. Reaching the summit around sunrise is the reward, with the first light spreading across Lake Natron, the Rift Valley and the surrounding volcanic landscape.
Best Time: June to November
Difficulty: Challenging
Highlights: Volcanic terrain, sunrise from the summit, Lake Natron, Great Rift Valley scenery and Maasai cultural experiences.
The surrounding area also offers opportunities to combine the mountain with Lake Natron, waterfalls, wildlife and cultural experiences, making it possible to turn the climb into a wider Northern Tanzania adventure.
