Tanzania is home to some of Africa’s most important wildlife areas, from the endless plains of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the forests, wetlands, rivers, and protected landscapes found across the country. Conservation plays an important role in protecting these natural treasures for future generations.
Wildlife & Habitat Protection
Tanzania’s conservation system protects a wide range of wildlife and habitats, including elephants, lions, rhinos, giraffes, wildebeest, birds, wetlands, forests, grasslands, and important wildlife corridors.
Different institutions have responsibilities across these areas. TANAPA manages Tanzania’s national parks, while TAWA is responsible for wildlife conservation and sustainable management in areas outside national parks and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
Conservation & Communities
Conservation is also about people. In different parts of Tanzania, local communities play an important role in protecting natural resources and living alongside wildlife.
Wildlife Management Areas, for example, provide a framework for communities to participate in wildlife management while benefiting from sustainable use of natural resources.
