Mahale Mountains National Park
Mahale Mountains National Park
Location: Western Tanzania, along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika.
Accessibility:
Mahale is one of Tanzania’s more remote destinations. It is normally accessed by domestic flight followed by a boat transfer, or by boat from Kigoma depending on the itinerary.
Activities:
- Chimpanzee tracking
- Forest hiking
- Swimming
- Snorkelling
- Kayaking
- Boat trips
- Nature photography
What Makes It Unique?
Mahale combines tropical forest, mountains and the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. Few destinations offer the opportunity to track chimpanzees in the morning and enjoy a lakeside experience later the same day.
Communities Around the Attraction:
Communities around Lake Tanganyika are traditionally involved in fishing, farming and small-scale trade. Tourism supports local employment while encouraging the protection of the surrounding natural environment.
Best Time to Visit:
June to October is generally favourable for hiking and wildlife activities. Weather conditions should be considered when planning boat transfers.
