Tour Overview

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of the country’s most rewarding trekking experiences. Standing at 4,566 meters, Meru offers a beautiful combination of adventure, wildlife, dramatic landscapes, and spectacular mountain views.

The following days take you through the lush forest of Arusha National Park, where you may encounter wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, monkeys, and various bird species. As you climb higher, the landscape gradually changes from tropical forest to moorland and finally to the rocky alpine environment around the summit.

The highlight of the adventure comes with an early-morning summit attempt to Socialist Peak at 4,566 meters, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Meru’s dramatic crater and, on clear days, the magnificent silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro.

After reaching the summit, you descend through the mountain’s beautiful landscapes before returning to Arusha and transferring to the airport for your onward flight.

Mount Meru is not simply a climb -it is a journey through different worlds, from wildlife-rich forest to a dramatic volcanic summit.

Day To day

Day 1
Arrival At Kia / JRO To Moshi Town

Destination: Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO/KIA), you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and transferred privately to your hotel in Arusha.

The drive gives you your first introduction to northern Tanzania, with beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and, depending on the weather, possible glimpses of Mount Meru.

Once at the hotel, you will check in and have time to relax after your journey.

Later, in the evening, you will meet your professional mountain guide for a pre-trek briefing. Your guide will take you through the itinerary, safety procedures, weather conditions, equipment requirements, and what to expect during the climb.

You will then enjoy dinner and have a good night's rest before your Mount Meru adventure begins.

Day 2
Momella Gate To Momella Camp

Distance: Approximately 10 km
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours
Altitude: 1,500m -2,500m
Habitat: Montane Forest & Moorland

After breakfast, you leave Arusha and drive to Arusha National Park, where your Mount Meru adventure officially begins.

At Momella Gate, you will complete the necessary park registration and meet the mountain crew. Depending on park regulations and conditions, an armed ranger will accompany the group through sections of the route where wildlife encounters are possible.

The trail begins gently through open woodland and montane forest.

This first day is particularly special because Mount Meru is not only a mountain -it is also part of a wildlife-rich national park. Along the way, you may see giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, monkeys, and a variety of birds.

As you climb higher, the forest becomes quieter and the landscape begins to open up.

After several hours of walking, you reach Momella Camp, where your accommodation will be prepared.

Enjoy dinner, relax, and listen to the sounds of the mountain as you prepare for the higher sections ahead.

Day 3
Momella Camp To Saddle Hut

Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Altitude: 2,500m -3,570m
Habitat: Moorland & Alpine Environment

After breakfast, you continue your climb toward Saddle Hut.

The trail gradually becomes steeper as you leave the forest behind and enter the moorland zone.

On the way, you have the opportunity to make an acclimatization climb to Little Meru, which stands at approximately 3,820 meters.

From Little Meru, the views are impressive, with beautiful perspectives across Arusha National Park and the surrounding landscapes.

After enjoying the scenery, you descend back toward Saddle Hut, where you will spend the afternoon resting and preparing for the summit attempt.

Your guide will brief you about the early-morning summit climb, and you will have an early dinner before getting some rest.

The night may be short, but the reward ahead is worth it.

Day 4
Saddle Hut To Summit Peak Then Descending To Momella Gate

Distance: Approximately 15-20 km
Hiking Time: 10-14 hours
Altitude: 3,570m -4,566m - 1,500m
Habitat: Alpine Desert, Moorland & Montane Forest

Today is the biggest and most rewarding day of your Mount Meru adventure.

You wake very early, usually around midnight or shortly after, have a light breakfast, and begin your summit attempt under the stars.

The trail becomes increasingly rocky as you approach the crater rim. Your guide will maintain a slow and steady pace, allowing you to conserve energy for the final ascent.

As dawn begins to appear, you reach the Mount Meru crater rim.

From here, you continue toward Summit Peak at 4,566 meters, the highest point of Mount Meru.

Reaching the summit is a powerful moment. If the weather is clear, you can enjoy magnificent views across the surrounding landscape and, in the distance, the impressive profile of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Take some time to celebrate, take photographs, and enjoy the sunrise before beginning your descent.

You return to Saddle Hut for a short rest before continuing down through the mountain's beautiful forest toward Momella Gate.

At the gate, you complete the final park procedures and meet your driver for the transfer back to Arusha.
